Transmission Troubleshooting

Transmission Troubleshooting

You may find that ATC or other pilots are having trouble hearing your transmissions. Often, these issues can be fixed though settings, positioning, or understanding of the system functionality. Below are the most common issues experienced and ways to fix them.

Microphone Weak or Inoperative

  1. Position the 'Talk' side of the microphone (indicated by a solid white dot just outside of the windscreen) is pointed directly toward your mouth.  The microphone should be close enough that your lips will touch the windscreen when you purse them, but not so close that they touch when you talk.
  2. Verify the Microphone Routing Switch (located on the face of the Aviation Application Cable)  is in the Aircraft position.
  3. Verify the Microphone Gain ( the thumbwheel located on the side of the Aviation Application Cable)  is turned up to 8 or 9.
  4. (HARMONY Pro Only, 2016-2021) - Verify the switch on the back of the inline controller (the pill shaped housing on the cord about 6” (12cm) from the headphones)  is set to the "Phone" or "|" position.
  5. Cycle the switches and thumbwheels several times each and return them to the proper position.  This should alleviate any potential contact issue in the switch mechanism.
  6. Gently move the cable in different directions near any junction with a plug or housing.  If the microphone cuts in and out with movement then there is a fault and the headset will need to be repaired.

Microphone Picks Up Too Noise

  1. Position the 'Talk' side of the microphone (indicated by a solid white dot just outside of the windscreen) to be pointed directly toward your mouth.  The microphone should be close enough that your lips will touch the windscreen when you purse them, but not so close that they touch when you talk.
  2. Adjust the Microphone Gain (located on the side of the Aviation Application Cable) to find the proper balance point between low cockpit noise and strong transmissions.

Low or No Sidetone (hearing yourself speak)

Sidetone is solely a function of the aircraft radio/intercom.  There is no circuitry in the headset that feeds microphone audio back to the headphone speakers.  Any controls for sidetone will be found on the radio or intercom.
