RFI Information
A loud tone or echo while keying the aircraft radios is typically a symptom of RFI (Radio Frequency Interference).
This issue often affects:
- Handheld Radios
- Ultralights
- Fabric Aircraft
- When the antenna is positioned very close to the pilot seat.
The underlying issue is the proximity of the antenna to the pilot as well as the angle of the headset cable in relation to the antenna (an antenna is just a 'tuned' wire). There a are a few things you can try to alleviate this issue:
- Turn down the mic gain on the headset (the wheel on the side of the unit).
- Turn down the gain on the aircraft radio (if so equipped).
- Reposition the cable of the headset (angle in relation to the antenna).
